About Ozempic

Everything you need to know about this medication

Ozempic contains the active substance semaglutide, which is used to lower blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes.

The medication itself is a clear and colourless solution with a pH of 7.4. Ozempic is provided in a prefilled multi-dose disposable pen, which contains the drug solution, semaglutide, in a 1.5 mL or 3 mL cartridge; equivalent to 2 mg or 4 mg semaglutide.

For more resources, including a full list of the risks and benefits of Ozempic, please review the product monograph.

Ozempic belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists family of medications. It works by helping your body make more insulin when your blood sugar is high.

It’s important to note that you should follow any diet and lifestyle advice from your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse while using Ozempic.

Ozempic is used for the once-weekly treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, to help improve their glycemic control.

This is usually done in combination with changes in dietary habits, as well as a regimen of regular exercise.

It’s very important to note that Ozempic is not a substitute for insulin.

Ozempic is a subcutaneous injection, with one dose taken each week. When ordering Ozempic online, the injections come pre-loaded and ready for use.

The best places to inject Ozempic are on the top of the thighs, the front of the abdomen, and the upper arms.

Safety & Side Effects

Important safety information and what to expect

The most common Ozempic side effects include:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Gas or bloating
  • Abdominal pain or distension
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea or indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Vomiting
  • Gastritis
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue

There are a number of patients that should avoid getting Ozempic prescriptions online, including those who are:

  • Under the age of 18 or over 65 years old
  • Living with type 1 diabetes
  • Living with diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Living with a history (or family history) of thyroid tumors
  • Living with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Living with pancreatitis
  • Living with diabetic retinopathy
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

It’s always a good idea to talk to your healthcare practitioner about your medical history and current conditions before requesting Ozempic online.

This depends on where you order your Ozempic from. It may not be safe to order Ozempic from unlicensed sources that aren’t regulated by the Government of Canada. This is because there is no governing body overseeing the production, manufacturing, and distribution of unregulated medications.

In turn, this can lead to issues like damaged product, improper storage, inconsistent dosages, or unlisted ingredients in doses, which can be dangerous to take.

However, we only use our licensed online pharmacy, which means you can rest assured that it is safe to order Ozempic online in Canada from Border Pharmacy.

The surprising thing about what to expect after taking your first dose of Ozempic is that, most likely, you won’t notice any major changes right away.

Although your Ozempic injections will start to work within a couple of hours of being taken, the actual changes that you’ll notice in regards to appetite and weight loss can take a few weeks or even months to occur; especially since your practitioner will start your dosage low and slowly increase it at predetermined intervals throughout your treatment.

Usage & Interactions

Guidance on daily use, interactions, and storage

If you’re wondering what drugs should not be taken with Ozempic, there are some medications that are considered contraindications with Ozempic, such as diuretics and diabetic treatments.

Diuretics increase your body’s chances of becoming dehydrated, so they should only be used with the supervision of your practitioner and with caution.

Due to the fact that Ozempic decreases your appetite, which encourages smaller meals and eating less often, diabetic medications should also be taken only with monitoring from your practitioner as they can also lower your blood sugar. Combined, this can lead to blood sugar unintentionally dropping to unhealthy or dangerous levels.

To help make this easier to understand, we’ve put together a list of medications you shouldn’t take with Ozempic:

  • Drugs to treat hypertension
  • Drugs to treat heart failure
  • Drugs to treat HIV infection
  • Drugs to treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder
  • Drugs to suppress appetite/cause weight loss
  • Decongestants
  • Drugs to treat asthma

Can you drink alcohol while taking Ozempic for weight loss? Technically, you can drink alcohol and use Ozempic, but you should be aware of potential side effects and the risks associated with combining this medication with other substances. Excess alcohol consumption or consuming alcohol instead of eating can lower blood sugar levels and therefore increase the risk of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar episodes when combined. Both increased alcohol consumption and taking Ozempic increases the likelihood of developing pancreatitis. It’s ultimately your choice if you want to have an occasional drink while taking a treatment like Ozempic — but it’s best to consult your healthcare practitioner before doing so.

Ozempic storage is easy to maintain, you just have to ensure that your treatment is kept between 2 to 30˚C in order to be stable. Keeping Ozempic in the refrigerator between uses can help keep it within the 2 to 30˚C range, but it is not necessary unless the temperature in the location of storage is outside of this range. The pen you are using can be kept at room temperature for up to 56 days.

Prior to first useAfter first use

The first thing to remember is not to panic! While it’s not a good idea to regularly miss dosages, it’s not going to cause any major disruption in your treatment.

If you miss a dose, there are two potential scenarios that you should follow, depending on the timeline of your missed dose:

  1. 1If it’s 5 days or less since you should have used Ozempic®, use it as soon as you remember. Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.
  2. 2If it’s more than 5 days since you should have used Ozempic®, skip the missed dose. Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.

REMEMBER: Do not take an extra dose or increase the dose to make up for a missed dose. It will not improve the effect of your treatments, and it can increase your risks of negative side effects occurring.

Border Pharmacy

Border Pharmacy is Canada’s first truly integrated healthcare platform. We provide on-demand treatment for everyday health needs like weight loss, mental health, sexual health, and more. Our digital-first approach to healthcare includes everything from diagnosis to prescription — all accessible from the comfort of home.

No. Border Pharmacy provides a faster, hassle-free way for you to get a treatment plan for certain conditions, but our service does not replace your primary care provider. For matters that extend beyond obtaining a lifestyle treatment safely and easily, we encourage you to consult your primary health practitioner in person.

Absolutely. Our online assessments have been designed to ask all the necessary questions required for diagnosis. We’ve worked with specialists to create an assessment process that can provide sufficient information for the healthcare practitioner to determine whether or not you are eligible for a prescription and craft an appropriate treatment plan.

Anyone who is 18 years or older (16 or older for acne and birth control prescriptions), and is located in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan or Ontario.

After creating an account, you will complete a medical assessment for evaluation by one of the Border Pharmacy healthcare practitioners. During your assessment, you will have the opportunity to send your practitioner questions via secure messaging. In most cases, practitioners will complete your assessment with secure messaging alone but sometimes they may determine you require an audio or video visit. If your practitioner has determined a prescription treatment is appropriate, they will approve your visit and write you a prescription. Our pharmacy will then ship your prescription to your home.

You can expect to receive a response from a healthcare practitioner within 24 hours of submission. If you’ve been waiting longer than this, please reach out to our Patient Support team.

Not long. After completing your assessment, a practitioner will generally respond within 24 hours, and often much sooner. Treatment plans will be processed within 2-4 business days of your approval date. All packages are shipped via Express Post, which usually takes 2-3 business days.

Yes, your security is paramount to Border Pharmacy’s mission. Personal health information provided during your medical assessment is strictly and legally confidential between you and the Border Pharmacy healthcare practitioner. All your account information is stored safely and securely. Border Pharmacy is compliant with all federal and provincial health privacy legislation.

Border Pharmacy charges a fee for the online visit. In most cases the fee is $40 but varies by treatment category. The visit fee includes a prescription valid for up to a year (depending on the condition) and on-going support from the healthcare practitioner or pharmacist.

Treatment coverage varies greatly between different insurance plans. The good news is that if you are covered, Border Pharmacy can bill your insurer directly, and then process your treatment plan at no additional cost to you. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for.
